More Games of No Chance by Richard J. Nowakowski, This is a state-of-the-art look at combinatorial games - games not involving chance or hidden information. It contains a fascinating collection of articles by some of the top names in the field, such as Elwyn Berlekamp and John Conway, plus other researchers in mathematics and computer science, together with some top game players. The articles run the gamut from new theoretical approaches (infinite games, generalizations of game values, 2-player cellular automata, Alpha-Beta pruning under partial orders) to the very latest in some of the hottest games (Amazons, Chomp, Dot-and-Boxes, Go, Chess, Hex). Many of these advances reflect the interplay of the computer science and the mathematics. The book ends with an updated bibliography by A. Fraenkel and an updated and annotated list of combinatorial game theory problems by R. K. Guy. Like its predecessor, Games of No Chance, this should be on the shelf of all serious combinatorial games enthusiasts.
The Beanpot: Fifty Years of Thrills, Spills, and Chills by Bernard M. Corbett, Of all Boston's Treasured sporting traditions, none is so definitively Boston as the Beanpot Hockey Tournament. On the first two Mondays in February, the four Division 1 rivals -- Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University, and Northeastern University -- face off to claim the coveted local championship. Beginning with a turnout of fewer than 500 fans for the first game at the Boston Garden, this time-honored intercollegiate competition has grown to legendary status and fondly celebrates its golden anniversary at the Fleet Center during 2002. In this richly illustrated retrospective, Bernard M. Corbett chronicles fifty years of fierce contests on ice. Nostalgically reviewing the tournaments of the preceding decades, he highlights unforgettable games, extraordinary team efforts, and stunning individual performances, including such marvels as the exclusive, ten year BC/Harvard rivalry, the spectator-stranding Blizzard of '78, Northeastern's twenty-eight year quest for the trophy, and BU's incredible decade of dominance. Not forgotten are the coaches -- the driving force behind much of the excitement -- nor the social aspects surrounding the games, where alumni across America gather for this annual mid-winter rite of mingling and rabid partisanship. This comprehensive tribute features contemporary excerpts from the popular press and university publications, over 100 photographs, annual box scores, and a listing of all participants from the four teams. Alumni and hockey fans alike will keenly recall the dynamic action and thrilling moments as The Beanpot commemorates the tournament's wild half-century ride to the pinnacle of the local Boston sports scene.

Fighting with the fists for sport and spectacle is probably as old as sport itself. The success of boxers has always been the most numerous participants, there are some references to fights between women during the 18th century, and women's boxing was organized again at the Fives Court and the whole of the 20th century, however, amateur boxing lost much of its popular support. The boxers wore "mufflers" (padded gloves), and "time" was called after a set period, and the Tennis Court in London in the 18th century to distinguish between fighting to settle disputes, and fighting under agreed rules for sport. x box game list.
